School boards in Massachusetts are embracing an intolerant and divisive ideology, sometimes referred to as Critical Race Theory (CRT). Proponents of this ideology claim that its primary objective is to remedy racial inequality, a goal that we fully support. But the regressive ideology underlying CRT locks students into an identity defined by immutable traits such as the color of their skin. It promotes an illiberal worldview that is fundamentally at odds with the ideals of equality, fairness, and tolerance upon which America was founded. Some of CRT’s claims include:
This divisive ideology constitutes race-essentialism, which means that it makes “race” the defining feature of every unique person. Race-essentialism moves us backward, not forward. Unfortunately, teachers and administrators are now encouraging our students to become activists for this regressive ideology, rather than focusing students on developing their fullest academic and human potential.
